The IEEE is forming a group to revise the IEEE 1625 standard for lithium-ion laptop batteries and guess which two companies will chair it … wait for it … Sony and Dell. These two companies have extensive experience in exploding batteries which makes them eminently qualified to chair the group.Exploding batteries incidents have caused a massive recall of lithium-ion laptop batteries this year. Most of the batteries have been manufactured by Sony and sold to major laptop makers like Dell.
This just goes to show what money can do, didnt know that even IEEE could do something as stupid as this.
Putting Dell on this board is not stupid… they obviously need to voice their lessons learned in requirements for battery capacity and thermal limits. Sony can obviously bring to the table the limitations of their own designs… perhaps this time they will actually work together on a design that won’t go up in flames.
